KUALA LUMPUR: Pembangunan standard baharu halal Malaysia menjadi penanda aras bahawa industri halal semakin mantap di samping berkembang bukan sahaja di peringkat dalam negara malah ke persada antarabangsa.

Perkara itu dinyatakan oleh Pensyarah Pengurusan Industri Halal, Akademi Pengajian Islam Kontemporari (ACIS), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Muhamad Afiq Abd Razak sempena penganjuran Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS 2023), baru-baru ini.

Beliau berkata, menerusi acara itu Jabatan Standard Malaysia (JSM) mengadakan program 'Seminar on Halal Profession' bagi membentangkan satu standard baharu di bawah siri standard halal Malaysia.

Seminar itu dibentangkan panelis terdiri daripada pelbagai agensi termasuk Kementerian Pelaburan, Perdagangan dan Industri Malaysia (MITI), Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM), Halal Development Corporation Berhad (HDC), JSM, dan Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK), katanya.

"Kupasan telah dibuat berkenaan dengan standard MS2691:2021 Halal Profession - General Requirements. Umumnya, standard ini memperincikan tentang tahap profesionalisme di dalam pembangunan kerjaya industri halal.

"Ini merupakan satu anjakan baharu dalam memperkasakan kepakaran khususnya kepada mereka yang berkecimpung dalam bidang pengurusan industri halal.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning people to stop using two more eye drop products after the agency found bacterial contamination in some of them.

According to a notice posted on the FDA's website, consumers should not use Dr. Berne’s MSM Drops 5% Solution and LightEyez MSM Eye Drops.

"Using contaminated eye drops could result in minor to serious vision-threatening infection which could possibly progress to a life-threatening infection," the FDA announced in the recall issued Tuesday.

Federal health regulators reported that due to the industry’s recent manufacturing issues with eye drops, officials conducted sampling and testing based on Dr. Berne’s drops and LightEyez MSM Eye Drops. Testing found both products contaminated with microbes and that they were not sterile.

WITH the heightened interest in oximeters, some irresponsible sellers have duped consumers into buying fake devices.

The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) tells Sunday Star that it has received over 15 complaints about fake oximeters since last month.

“In one case, a consumer used an oximeter on a pencil and it ‘detected’ oxygen levels.

“I found this to be ridiculous and unscrupulous on the part of the seller,” says Fomca deputy secretary-general Nur Asyikin Aminuddin.

She says such dubious devices are usually very cheap, costing around RM20.

“Most complainants bought the devices through social media or online marketplaces.

“We asked these consumers to lodge reports with the authorities like the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry for action to be taken against the errant sellers,” Nur Asyikin says.

As the demand for Covid-19 home self-test kits is high, she urges the government to bring down the prices of such products – they currently cost between RM30 and RM40 per set.

“As people are losing jobs and struggling to make ends meet, the government must help consumers in this small but important way.

“It is becoming a necessity now for every home to have such kits so that they can do regular self-checks,” she says, adding that the public could curb the spread of Covid-19 by doing self-tests, especially parents have to who go out and have young children at home.

She points out that the demand for items like self-test kits, thermometers and oximeters is high because of the spike in sporadic cases.

“This means we don’t necessarily have to be a close contact of a positive patient to get infected.

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) has called on the authorities to come out with mandatory safety standards for cooking gas cylinders.

CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader said in Malaysia, gas leaks causing explosions had resulted in numerous injuries and deaths over the years.

He said the latest incident involved a doctor here, who is battling for his life after a gas explosion left 95 per cent of his body covered in burns.
"In view of the danger of gas cylinders explosion, CAP calls on the authorities to come out with mandatory safety standards for cooking gas cylinders and provide safety procedures on cooking gas use and during emergencies.
"CAP also called on the authorities to make it mandatory for cylinders to carry an expiry date for the cylinder, valve, hose and regulator as well as have regular inspections on the gas cylinders used," he said today.

CAP, Mohideen said, also urged the authorities to:

• ensure that all parts, including the rubber O-ring conform to standards;

• establish an agency for testing the cylinder and other related items;

• establish a regulatory agency for the cooking gas industry;

• make it mandatory for hawker stalls and food outlets to have fire extinguishers on hand; and

• promote gas safety awareness.

Where consumers are concerned, Mohideen said, they should:

• keep their kitchens clean as oily surfaces catch fire easily;

• check the condition of the gas cylinder before using. Pay attention to the rubber seal inside the cylinder head (after the cap is removed). The seal prevents leaks after the regulator is inserted;

PETALING JAYA: Hypermarket chain AEON has recalled a batch of eggs which has been flagged by Singaporean authorities for the presence of Salmonella enteritidis (SE).

The affected eggs from Linggi Agriculture Sdn Bhd bear the “CEM014” stamp.

Yesterday, the Singapore Food Agency said it was recalling the batch of eggs. It said SE can cause foodborne illness if food is undercooked or consumed raw.

“AEON would like to inform that we have immediately recalled similar batches of eggs that can be identified by the stamp ‘CEM014’ from our supermarket shelves.

“Customers who have purchased the products are urged to return them to the place of purchase at the customer service counter for a full refund as per the receipt,” it said.

KUALA LUMPUR: A cosmetic product to treat pimples and acne scars, FS Turmeric Cream has been found to contain schedule poisons, mercury and betamethasone 17-valerate, which are harmful to health.

Health director-general, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today announced the notification of the cosmetic product has been cancelled by the Pharmaceutical Services director of the Health Ministry (MOH) and is not allowed to be sold in the country.

"Mercury is prohibited in cosmetic products because it is harmful to health. When absorbed into the body, mercury can cause damage to the kidney and nervous system.

"The substance can also affect the development of the brain in infants as well as causing rashes, irritation and changes to the skin. In this regard, the people are advised not to use the cosmetic product," he said.
He said the cream also contained betamethasone 17-valerate which is a medicine registered with the drug control authority and only could be used on the advice of a health professional.

The substance can cause side effects such thinning of the skin, irritation, or risk being absorbed into the blood stream.

In this regard, he said retailers and distributors of the cosmetic product have to remove the item from their shelves immediately.

Noor Hisham said selling and distributing the product would be violating the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.

SHAH ALAM, 15 Feb -- SIRIM QAS International sedang membangunkan kaedah untuk pengguna memeriksa status barangan elektrik atau elektronik yang dibeli secara dalam talian bagi memastikan barangan terbabit mempunyai kelulusan SIRIM dan Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST).
