IN our society and culture, our perception of reality is shaped by the information and messages we receive through the media. A few generations ago, our culture storytellers were people, family, friends and others in the community. For many people today, the most powerful storyteller is the Internet and the mobile phone. All of us are affected by advertising, news, movies, Facebook, WhatsApp and other forms of media. That is why today, media is such a powerful force.
Children receive a huge amount of information from a wide array of sources, far beyond the traditional media – ie, television, radio, newspapers and magazines – of most parents. There are text messages, memes, viral videos, social media, video games, advertising and more.
From celebrity gossip to magazine covers to WhatsApp messages to memes, media is telling us something, shaping our understanding of the world and even compelling us to think to act in certain way.
PUTRAJAYA: The government is open to using whatever infrastructure available to drive Internet penetration in rural areas throughout the country.There are at least a million people in very remote areas and a further 2.5 million to 2.8 million still with slow-speed Internet access in semi-urban and rural areas.To get faster-speed broadband to outlying areas, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said he is exploring the use of satellites, running fibre along sewerage pipes and even possibly opening access to existing poles that carry wires to homes.
“In terms of infrastructure, a lot more need to be done. There are many areas which have not yet been wired up so there is a need to think outside the box and look into new ways to provide infrastructure which is faster and cheaper for the general public.“That is one of the reasons for the pilot project in Jasin to use existing infrastructure partially to provide broadband to semi-urban and rural areas, and to the Felda settlers. The project is a success and now it is up to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to decide what to do from here on. We used TNB poles, which made access quicker and were able to cut cost significantly,” Gobind told StarBiz.Though he seems keen to explore the use of satellites, some experts disagree with the idea as they believe it would be too costly and not practical. They are more receptive to using sewerage pipes for fibre access and Gobind said he had received proposals to have sewerage pipes used to lay cables for Internet access.

KULAI (Bernama): Kerajaan kini mengkaji semula Akta Pendidikan untuk menjadikan pelajar wajib melengkapkan sekolah dari Tahun Satu hingga Tingkatan Lima.Timbalan Menteri Pelajaran Teo Nie Ching berkata ibu bapa yang gagal menghantar anak ke sekolah boleh dikenakan denda hingga RM5,000 atau enam bulan penjara.
Beliau berkata pada masa ini, Akta Pendidikan hanya memerlukan murid untuk menyelesaikan persekolahan sehingga Tahun Enam."Pada masa ini, lebih dari 98% kanak-kanak bersekolah (di sekolah rendah) tetapi sasaran kami adalah 100%," katanya kepada pemberita selepas melancarkan program 'Ziarah Cakna' peringkat kebangsaan di Pejabat Pelajaran Daerah Kulai di sini Ahad (Jan 27).Teo berkata program itu adalah kesinambungan inisiatif 'Tiada Kanak-kanak Left Behind' yang bermula pada Julai 2018, bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti masalah yang dihadapi oleh keluarga yang mengakibatkan anak-anak mereka tidak menghadiri sekolah.

In the time since the supermarket boom ten years ago, Malaysian food shopping habits have undergone a sea change. For a number of years, total sales in the largest supermarkets – Tesco, Giant, Carrefour – have exceeded by some margin the sales of all other market forms – convenience stores; sundry stores; hawkers; dry, wet, day and night markets – combined.In these ten years, there has been no significant scholarly activist or community interest in the functioning of these institutions and their impact on the wider economy. With such a large and increasing percentage of the consumer ringgit finding its way to foreign hypermarkets and supermarkets, the market is certainly deserving of such analysis.
Foreign supermarts arrive in S E Asia
Recent news that French supermarket chain Carrefour is looking to sell its Malaysian assets may seem incongruous with the 45.8 per cent by 2014 growth of the food retail market projected by Malaysia Food and Drink Report Q4 2010. The food retail market has seen constant growth with concomitant consolidation since 2000. This is perhaps not to the benefit of consumers or other actors in the economy.The “miracle” growth in East Asia created an opulent, forward-thinking, culturally exposed demographic. This demographic was termed a “rising middle class” by analysts – in other words a group of people with enough money for frivolous expenditure. Foreign retailers, with their diverse stock, friendly advertising and modern environment, were clearly intended to cater for this demographic.
KUALA TERENGGANU: Consumers in Terengganu may have to pay higher water tariff like in other states as the state government has not raised the rates for the last 22 years.Mentri Besar Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said Terengganu was among three states which had not increased water tariff during that period.
GEORGETOWN: Kerajaan negeri, menerusi Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP), dijangka mengurangkan antara 20 hingga 30 peratus subsidi air domestik bagi memastikan pembangunan infrastruktur air di negeri itu dapat dilaksanakan.Ketua Menteri, Chow Kon Yeow, berkata ketika ini PBAPP membelanjakan lebih RM80 juta setahun bagi subsidi air, membabitkan keperluan 1.76 juta pengguna.Beliau berkata, pengurangan subsidi air domestik itu adalah termasuk dalam cadangan semakan tarif air yang dibuat kepada Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN), baru-baru ini.“Pengurangan subsidi air domestik ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pendapatan daripada penggunaan perniagaan, untuk membiayai projek kejuruteraan bekalan air yang dirancang.
KANGAR: Rakyat negeri ini dinasihat mengurangkan aktiviti pelancongan ke Thailand, khususnya Hatyai, berikutan penularan virus Chikungunya di wilayah itu baru-baru ini.
Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Kesihatan negeri, Teh Chai Ann, berkata pihaknya kini sedang memantau secara ketat pelancong dari negara jiran itu yang masuk ke negara ini.
Beliau berkata, tumpuan pemantauan itu dilaksana di pintu masuk sempadan Malaysia-Thailand iaitu di Padang Besar, Wang Kelian dan Jeti Kuala Perlis bagi pengunjung yang menaiki feri dari Satun, Thailand.
“Pihak berkuasa termasuk Jabatan Kesihatan negeri akan melakukan pemeriksaan di pintu masuk dan mengenal pasti individu yang berisiko membawa virus itu agar penularannya dapat dikawal di negeri ini.
“Kita khuatir jika kawasan sempadan tidak dikawal dengan baik, penyakit itu boleh merebak dengan pantas ke negara ini.
“Jadi saya meminta rakyat dapat memberikan kerjasama kepada Jabatan Kesihatan negeri seandainya mereka perlu menjalani pemeriksaan ketika berada di pintu sempadan,” katanya ketika dihubungi hari ini.
Chai Ann berkata, pihaknya turut bekerjasama dengan pasukan keselamatan dalam memastikan langkah kawalan dan keselamatan bergerak seiring.
“Ini kerana, pintu masuk di Padang Besar menjadi pilihan utama pelancong dari Hatyai kerana jaraknya lebih dekat berbanding pintu masuk di Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah.
“Selain itu, kita juga sarankan pelancong dari Perlis agar menjalani rawatan pemeriksaan sekiranya mereka terkena demam panas, ruam di badan dan berasa sengal sendi sejurus pulang dari Thailand,” katanya.
Semalam, media tempatan Thailand, Bangkok Post, melaporkan virus Chikungunya iaitu jangkitan yang biasanya berlaku di Afrika dikesan berlaku di Hatyai.
Menurut laporan media berkenaan, berpuluh-puluh pesakit terpaksa mendapatkan rawatan di klinik di bandar berkenaan akibat jangkitan virus berkenaan.

According to Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) assessment on 2011, one-third of all food produced in the world for human consumption never reached the consumer’s table.
It is equivalent to 1.3 billion tons of fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, seafood, and grains rotten on the farm, lost during distribution, or are thrown away in grocery stores, restaurants, and home kitchens. This is also about four times the amount of food needed to feed nearly 800 million people on the planet who went to bed hungry each night.
Food wastage does not only pose a huge economic burden and crucial social problem but it gives a huge impact on the climate change. Food waste which ends up in landfills will produce methane gas. Methane gas is one of the greenhouse gases that warming up the Earth.
